Social Media flared up after Manny Pacquiao lost to Timothy Bradley via controversial split decision. Kimoftheworld.com is not a sports blog so I won’t be giving you my view of what happened and why I think Manny Pacquiao should have won, instead, I will talk about some of the celebrity tweets that got retweeted and shared thousands of times (which even made the news).
Check this image for example:
Here is the tweet that made Filipinos feel they’re under a Good Romance…reportedly retweeted over 11,000 times.
The Lady Gaga account that tweeted it has @ladygego and not @ladygaga as its handle and has less than 3k followers (even I have more followers than this account).
Below is the VERIFIED (real) Lady Gaga twitter account. As you can see there is the blue Verification seal by Twitter and the account has more than 25 million followers.
And here’s the supposedly Katy Perry tweet that made a lot of Manny Pacquiao fans celebrate with Firework (yes, that’s a pun on her song). Check its almost 36k followers and the handle @katvperry, not @katyperry
This is the VERIFIED (real) Katy Petty twitter account. Of course there is the blue Twitter badge and the whopping 21M+ twitter followers.
Britney Spears also made a very nice tweet favoring Manny Pacquiao, or didn’t she? Check the tweet and account details below:
By the way, these accounts usually retweet one another so I’m guessing at least two of them is owned by a single person.
There are other bogus / parody twitter accounts of famous celebrities and politicians, some say that hey this is not the real account outright while others pose as the real ones. How would you know the difference? Twitter employs a verification system. Facebook is yet to come up with its own solution (yes there is a system of reporting fake profiles in Facebook but it’s far from Twitter’s verification system, the first identifies what’s fake, the latter authenticates accounts).
The topics #MannyPacquiaoIsStillTheWorldsBestBoxer, #RIPBoxing, Mommy Dionisia, Split Decision, #PacBradley, #pinoyforPACMAN, Freddie Roach etc trended on Twitter Worldwide and Philippines. Then somewhere along the way, news programs, old time bloggers got confused and mixed fake accounts from the real ones. Now what can we draw from this? A few things actually:
1. When it comes to news, the what sometimes outweighs the who (said it).
2. Many people are not aware that fake / bogus / parody accounts in Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites exist.
3. Many people are still unaware of verified and non-verified twitter accounts.
4. News sources can sometimes make mistakes, especially when there is so much crunch time going on in the newsroom.
5. It’s very easy to pose for a popular and powerful celebrity and get away with it.
There are a number of blogs and news programs that would benefit from this post, I don’t want to mention them but YOU certainly can.
For your information, the REAL celebrities who tweeted their support for Manny Pacquiao included Justin Timberlake, Jeremy Lin, Bruno Mars, Chris Daughtry, Miley Cyrus and many others, just not Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Britney Spears . (Kudos to Rappler for getting it correctly + more)
